NewPage Wisconsin System Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of NewPage Corp., and Niagara Development LLC announced Friday that Niagara Development has acquired the NewPage mill property and assets in Niagara, Wis.

The NewPage Niagara facility permanently closed in 2008 because of a drop in demand for coated paper. The paper machines at the Niagara mill produced about 250,000 tons of lightweight coated ground-wood papers used in magazines and catalogs. In March 2009, NewPage sold its hydroelectric facility in Niagara, in Marinette County, to Northbrook Wisconsin LLC.

Niagara Development is exploring options with the city of Niagara and others for possible uses of the property and assets going forward.

“Since the closure of the mill in 2008, NewPage has worked with the city of Niagara to locate a viable purchaser for the mill with a positive outcome for the community,” said George Bousley, mayor of the city of Niagara.

Based in Miamisburg, Ohio, NewPage Corp. is one of the largest coated paper manufacturers in North America. NewPage owns paper mills in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Nova Scotia, Canada.

Niagara Development has acquired several former industrial properties with various development plans to maximize land and site assets.
